Xbox’s Looking for Group model allows session creators to describe gameplay, skill, and social relationship preferences and approve people requesting to join.

This approach suggests an important lesson: social matching should optimize compatibility, not merely speed.

Fast matchmaking gets someone into a session. Better matching can give them a reason to return.

Design for Collaboration as Well as Competition

Leaderboards are easy to understand, but competition should not dominate every social system.

Shared creation, cooperative goals, gifting, mentoring, group progression, and community challenges provide alternative reasons to participate.

Research on social videogaming has also shown that games can function as spaces for maintaining relationships.
